Anyone Here Ever Played VS System From the 2000's? Or still do?

Top Comment: I had boxes and boxes of this game. I eventually got rid of most of it, but I did keep a box of the "best stuff".
Completed VS Series
Main Post:
Completed the VS Series, it was initially released in Japan in half deck packs which revolved around the gym leaders of Kanto and Johto. The high value cards from it are Karen’s Umbreon, and Lance’s Charizard. But my favorites are Jasmine’s Steelix, Misty’s Quagsire, and Bugsy’s Beedrill. There are a lot of fantastic cards and each leader having an assigned artist really brings life to each of their teams.
These cards did not release to the mass market in English, but as tournament prize cards so you will probably never see them in English and if you do it will be half your 401k 😂
As a set overall I think it’s one of the best to ever release, and the TM’s at the end are a hilarious wall of gym leader portraits
Top Comment: Love it, this is one of my favorite sets. Karen's Umbreon is obviously the star but man that Gyarados... so nice. And much cheaper!

Korean vs Japanese cards
Main Post:
I'm getting back into collecting but I can't justify the prices of a lot of the English booster boxes. I've been looking at Korean cards since they are the cheapest. I'm in it for the art and nice looking cards, not for resale value.
I'm just wondering, is the art on Korean cards the same as on Japanese ones? I've tried looking it up but i've seen different answers. It doesn't help that I can barely find Korean card lists.
Top Comment: Japanese has the best quality, but the more recent Korean cards' quality have improved a lot.
Cards vs Gravity, surprisingly challenging
Main Post:
My wife bought this for some Christmas and new years fun. Usually we prefer a full board game but this one has become a quick favourite - games only take 5-20mins.
A simple concept: place stopper in a bottle, and the magnetic circle on top. Deal cards equally, take turns to play whichever card is on top. There are wild cards and special cards that are heavier or thinner but they become the colour they are resting on.
The plastic cards are fairly thick and have 4 slits, cards can't rest on cards that aren't the one you are connecting directly to (the red one in the photos looks like it is resting but there is somehow a millimetre or two). Any that drop off go into your deck, if all come down then you lose.
Easily 5/5 for simplicity, quality of the cards and challenge. Playing with our dog running around has added to the challenge.
Top Comment: Looks like a fun game to play at a casual get together (:
Cats VS Dogs SL cards revealed, on sale at 12 EDT
Main Post:
FINAL UPDATE: This entire thing is now SOLD OUT. Did anyone here predict that?
UPDATE 6: Everything now sold out except for non-foil Dogs which has a low stock as of 7:30 pm EDT. So this sold out faster than all the Miku sets aside from the first one? Did anyone expect that?
UPDATE 5: Both foil versions are now SOLD OUT as of 4:53 pm EDT and now non-foil Cats is "low sctock". Wow. I think this whole thing is actually going to sell out.
UPDATE 4 (4:30 pm EDT): Cats foil is now SOLD OUT. Dogs foil is low stock. Non-foil not showing anything for either. And the graphic has been updated to say "CATS WIN! All Cats Superdrop coming 2026!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turns out it was (of course) NOT a reprint of Cats/Dogs decks.
Dogs Are Better Than Cats Foil Edition | Secret Lair
Cats Are Better Than Dogs Foil Edition | Secret Lair
Same cards for both, just with cat versions or dog versions:
- 1x Escape to the Wilds
- 1x Rip Apart
- 1x Titanic Ultimatum
- 1x Arcane Signet
- 1x Basilisk Collar
ETA: Both foil and non-foil versions. $40 and $30 as usual.
UPDATE: Wait time only a few minutes as it went live. Limit of one foil + non-foil each per person.
I'm in for one foil of each, whatever. The cards are awful but people love dogs/cats so worth a gamble on there being more demand than we expect and/or a better bonus card. Also added the SLD that came with Murktide Regent (which has been moving up from its floor lately) to get to free shipping.
Also if anyone -- lol -- inexplicably still wants the steering wheel Sol Ring, you can still get them apparently.
UPDATE 2: Cats in foil already showing low stock. Considering there's a limit of one per account, that's pretty significant IMO.
UPDATE 3: Dog foil now low stock and CAT FOIL IS SOLD OUT!!! Cannot say I saw that coming!
Top Comment: Kinda shows why we are where we are. Wotc can sell 4 bucks worth of cards for 40 and they'll almost certainly sell out, crazy
Did anybody here play VS. System?
Main Post:
In the mid 2000's up through the early 2010's there was a game called VS. System that included both Marvel and DC licenses for the cards. It's back now as more of a LCG than a trading card game, but I haven't played the new version.
I think I see some DNA from VS. in Champions. Some of the keywords like stunned or the ability to exhaust. Some of the event/interrupt cards remind me a lot of the plot twists. Obviously these are both very different games, but I can't help but wonder if the designers weren't at least familiar with VS. Anybody else see any similarities?
Top Comment: I haven't played the old VS System, but I have played the new one. I would say that Marvel Champions has some similarities, but the overall structure is more consistent with other LCGs from Fantasy Flight than it is with any other superhero game I've played. The Lord of the Rings lcg in particular has a lot of overlap with Marvel Champions.
IMO this is one of the greatest Charizard cards ever printed…

Amazing card. Only reason why people downplay it is because it’s a promo, but it is so sick!!!
Best way to give Vbucks for birthday
Main Post:
Hi, my 11 yr old son’s birthday is today. He wants Vbucks. Any ideas on how to best gift them and maximize? Amazon seems to be out of virtual cards. I’d probably spend $50-75 (though I feel like it’s wasteful). It seems like some cards come with skins...idk. He’s obsessed with the game and has reached unreal level. Thanks for the help!
Top Comment: Go to a retail store or buy them in game
